FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded in 1992 by Dean Kamen, inventor of the Segway, and ever since has been inspiring young people to learn how to be leaders in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) career fields. FIRST is the nonprofit leader of advancing STEM education in the world. Almost 700,000 students around the globe learn about STEM by building robots to compete in FIRST events. Whether it’s elementary and middle schoolers in FIRST LEGO League, or highschoolers in FIRST Tech Challenge or FIRST Robotics Competition, Greendale students who are involved in FIRST are becoming part of a much larger STEM community.
Students competing in FIRST competitions build robots to compete in unique and exciting contests alongside robots from other schools and around the world. Students don’t know what the game will be until it is announced at the season kick-off, and then they get to work!
“FIRST inspires young people to be science and technology leaders and innovators by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.” -FIRST Vision Statement
This year, Greendale High School will be competing in FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). We’ll build and program industrial-size robots that compete in sports-style tournaments on a field almost as big as a basketball court. This year, the FRC theme is "Rapid React" and focuses on the innovative engineering, creative thinking, and teamwork behind travel, logistics and deliveries.
